FuLe International Ceramic Art Museums Newsletter

No. 02

Date:03/15/2006

Dear Friends,

It is more than a year since I wrote the first letter to everyone. FLICAM changes so fast and I really need to update the project. FLICAM’s first stage plan covered 2004-2005,. In this stage we had all main exhibition halls and function halls built in 2004. We also have the French Museum and the Scandinavia Museums built. Because of the successful opening of these two museums, FLICAM called a meeting at the end of 2005 to plan the future of FLICAM for next two years. Immediately Dr. Hsu made a trip to Australia and New Zealand in January, a trip to Europe in February and another trip to the U.S. in March. This letter will cover these subjects.

Dr. I Chi Hsu

Introduction

FuLe International Ceramic Art Museums (FLICAM) is aimed at promoting contemporary ceramic art in China and in the world. We particularly like to emphasize the contrast of the old and new, the east and west, and the tradition and modern. FLICAM is part of the Fuping Pottery Art Village (FPAV) which also owns a thousand acres of orchard land, a modern major ceramic tile factory, a ceramic leisure center and a 3-star hotel. The idea of building international ceramic art museums was initiated by Dr. I-Chi HSU in 2002. FPAV is willing to provide the land and commit the construction of museums. All museums in FLICAM are designed or supervised by Mr. Liu Kecheng, dean of the College of Architecture, Xian National Architecture and Technology University. He is the chief architect designer of the Hanyang Tomb Museum (near Xian Airport) and the future Qin Tomb (terra-cotta warriors tomb) Museum. FLICAM’s architecture emphasizes its surrounding environment such as the hundreds of emperor tombs, the caves, the loess landscape and the brick structures, yet the appearance and feeling is contemporary.

FLICAM intends to build museums not just for a country but also possible for representing a region. Therefore, we changed the first planned Denmark Museum into a Scandinavia Museum and the French Museum will still be a country museum but associated with other Mediterranean countries to form a suite. We will build museums in stages and they are listed in the following:

    First Stage Plan (2004-2005)

  1. Scandinavia Museum (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland) 2005-2008
  2. French Museum (2005) as part of the Mediterranean Museums Complex
  3. Second Stage Plan (2006-2007)

  4. America Museum Building (U.S.A., Canada, Mexico, Argentina) 2007-8
  5. Australasia Museum (Australia and New Zealand) 2006-7
  6. ICMEA Information Center.2007
  7. Third Stage Plan (2008-2010)

  8. Western Europe Museum (United Kingdom, Ireland, Holland, Belgium) 2007-8
  9. Italy Pavilion as part of the Mediterranean Museum Complex (2007-2008)
  10. Central Europe ((Germany, Switzerland, Austria,)
  11. Eastern European Museum ( Hungary, Zeche Republic, Poland, Latvia, Lithuren, Estonia) 2008-2010
  12. Other museums (Spain, Greece, Turkey) to add to the Mediterranean Complex, 2008-2010
  13. Asia Museum (Japan, Korea, SE Asia) 2008-10
  14. China Contemporary Ceramic Museum 2008-10
  15. Folk Ceramic Art Museum, 2006-12
They are described as following:

I. First Stage Plan of FLICAM

The first stage plan of FLCAM (2004-2005) includes the building of two longitudinal dragon-like exhibition halls, a multifunctional dome hall, resident center including six living quarters and a working studio, and the HSU Museum House. All these buildings were completed in 2004 and two museums, namely the French Museum and the Scandinavia Museum were built in 2005.

IA. FLICAM Main Exhibition Halls (2004)
IA.1   FuLe International Ceramic Museums (FLICAM) started to build the main Dome Hall, twin longitudinal Dragon Halls, the Resident Center including a work studio and 6 living quarter, and the HSU Museum House in April, 2004. They all completed in August that year. To celebrate the completion of the construction, FLICAM held an International Ceramic Journal Editors Symposium in August 2004.It was very successful and more than 10 editors attended the meeting. An International Ceramic Emerging Artists Exhibition was also held in the Dome Hall. 63 international emerging artists (from 33 countries and regions) as recommended by editors to participate. The proceedings of the meeting and the catalog of the exhibition were published. The book has a total of 184 pages. It is available to purchase at the Axner Supply Co. in the U.S .
IA.2   At the end of the First International Ceramic Editors Symposium, a Fuping Declaration was issued and the International Ceramic Magazines Editors’ Association (ICMEA) was formed. ICMEA is based in Fuping and it will have its meeting once every three years in Fuping. FLICAM promised to build a documentary museum, or an International Ceramic Information Center. It is suggested that this center will collect a complete set of the world ceramic journal and the center will establish a website “FLICAM/ICMEA” and load all article title to the computer so it is possible to do cross correlation of the artist and the type of art work and provide service to all ceramic artists in the world.

IB. Scandinavian Museum (2005)

The Denmark Museum was the first one FLICAM intended to build. Five Denmark artists came to Fuping in 2004 and did art work. Then the idea to expand into a Scandinavia Museum came up and it was accepted by Danish artists as well as the FLICAM management. Dr. Hsu made a trip to visit all 4 Scandinavia countries and all the other 3 Scandinavia countries agreed to join. In 2005, 5 Swedish artists and 4 Norwegian artists came to Fuping and made art work in Fuping and attended the opening ceremony of the Scandinavia Museum. Likely this year more Scandinavia artists will come. Scandinavia artists are listed in the following bold face names are the organizers):
Denmark: Nina Hole, Bodil Manz, Ann Linemann, Michael Geersten, Stan Lyke Madsen.
Sweden: Janifer Forsberg, Ulla Viotti, Renata Spettellanl, Jakob Robertsson, Maria Klyvare
Norway: Ole Lislerud, Helene Kortner, Christina Peel, Marian Heyerdahl
Finland: Tapio Yli-Viikari, Pekka Paikkari, Kristina Riska, Kat Tuominen,

Denmark artists Priscilla Mouritzen will come in 2006-7. Bodil Manz also asked to come to Fuping in 2006 again. At least two more Swedish artists and one or two Norwaegian artists may come in 2006 again. All Finland artists will come in 2007.

It is interesting to note that the Resident Center we built was not welcome by artists because the work studio is too far away from the kiln and the main facilities and the living quarters are also too far from the working place, the hotel and the restaurant. So, the FLICAM management decided in early 2005 to convert the Resident Work Studio into the Scandinavia Museum by adding an atrium type glass room in the front as the entrance. It is an all brick structure. Swedish artist Maria Klyvare made a large mosaic tile wall (a subject of birch tree) in the front of the building. It was finished in early November and enough time for the opening of the Museum in November 13, 2005. The art works made by these almost 20 Scandinavia artists were installed the day before and the exhibition was successfully presented.

IC. French Museum (2005)

Daphne Corregan, Gilles Suffren and Jacque Kaufmann worked very hard for our French Museum project. Daphne finally come up a list of 28 French ceramic artists who want to come to Fuping. Now it becomes a 3 years program. In 2005, 10 French artists came and did the work for the opening. The rest will come in 2006 and 2007. Many important artists are on the list.

FLICAM started to construct the French Museum in late July and in 37 days it was finished just before the opening day. The opening ceremony was conducted in joy. No one believed it could be done. The opening date is at the end of the workshop, August 31, 2005.

Through the assistance of French Embassy in China. our project, the French Museum became the last project of the China-France Culture Year. Ms. Arff , project manager, came to Fuping to conduct the ground-breaking ceremony. In January and May of 2005, Dr. Hsu went to France twice to meet artists who would come to Fuping to work.

II. The Second Stage Plan (2006-2007)

A new second stage plan was made at the end of 2005 for the coming years 2006-2007, 4-5 museums are planned to be built. It is already decided that the IAC General Assembly meeting will be held in Xian in 2008 and the closing ceremony will be in FLICAM, Fuping.

II.A    Australasia Museum

In early 2005, Dr. Hsu was encouraged by Janet Mansfield to make a visit to Australasia for searching artists to come to Fuping and to make art work for the coming Australasia Museum in Fuping. By the end of 2005 FLICAM decided to build three museums in Fuping in 2006 and Australasia is the first of them. It includes Australia and New Zealand.

In January 27, Janet Mansfield organized a meeting at her office in Paddington, Sydney. Dr. Hsu came from Beijing and met with 7 other persons representing different institutions (see list below). The purpose of this meeting is to introduce the FLICAM program including building an Australasia Ceramic Museum in Fuping Pottery Village as a part of the FLICAM group. Dr. Hsu wished to have 12-16 ceramic artists coming to Fuping and make the art work for the Australasia Museum. The museum is expected to be opened in 2007. So, one of the purpose of this meeting was to find some of the institutions which could assist the traveling cost for the artist who wants to go to Fuping to work.. The second purpose was to find good artists to go.

It was suggested by Dr. Hsu that at least 6-8 artists were needed from Australia for first round workshop to make enough art work for the opening and another 4-6 were coming from New Zealand. It was also mentioned by Dr. Hsu that wood fire work was very strong in Australia and it should be emphasized. Dr. Hsu shown the design of the Australasia Museum which is a round building with a wood firing kiln situated in the center of the building. So, Chester Nealie would like to go for two months in 2007 and hope to find one or two more wood firing artists to go along.

It was also discussed how to announce the event so more Australian artists could know the opportunity. Janet Mansfield agreed to announce it in her magazine. Michael Reighey took initiation to liaison the artists searching work. Dr. Hsu commented on finding artists based on his experience with the French and Scandinavia groups. He said in the beginning do not consider the traveling money problem just find out the artists who would like to go to China to work. and find out what time period they can go. Because it is possible that some of them could be funding themselves or they can find money through their own connections. So let artists work out their own way and only the ones could not find any money then help them.

The meeting last about two hours. All agreed that these meeting members will continue to be concerned of the progress and Dr. Hsu will report to them after he visited all other cities in Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Hsu also visited Canberra, Melbourne and Auckland.

In Feb. 1, Dr. Hsu flew from Melbourne to Auckland, New Zealand. He originally contacted Moyra Elliot, but she was out of town and she asked Dr. Hsu to meet Rong Sang. So, Dr. Hsu set an appointment with him the next morning. In that evening, Dr. Hsu had a dinner with Peter Lange (0064 09 630-8942 (H) lange52@clear.net.nz ) and then visited his home. We exchanged ideas of FLICAM and he would like to come to Fuping.

In Feb.2, Dr. Hsu met Ron and he took Dr. Hsu to his home, a house of ceramic collections. In his home he also invited other artists to meet Dr. Hsu. Then all were invited by Ron to have a wonderful Chinese Dim Sims lunch.

All artists shown great interest to come to China except Len, he is over 80 years old, it would be a great task to get him to China. When Dr. Hsu stayed at the Copthrone Hotel he received a package from Chris Weaver, a fine contemporary vessel artist. He shown great interest to come to China to participate FLICAM program. DR. HSU also heard names of other good ceramic artists from New Zealand such as: Merilyn Wiseman and Matt Malend,

In Feb. 4, Grace Cochran took Dr. Hsu to the Powerhouse Museum It was a good opportunity to see some early days Australian ceramics. Grace is a good writer and good experience in ceramic research. She could be a big help in the future when our museums grows.

Before Dr. Hsu went to Australia, he did e-mail Robin Best and Gwyn and expressed the desire to meet them in Australia but Robin was in China and Gwyn went to the U.S.

CONCLUSIONS & SUGGESTIONS:

The following conclusions and suggestions were made by Dr. Hsu and are subject to change if other better ideas coming up.

  1. The Sydney Meeting members plus Kevin White continue serve as the “Consulting Board” or CB, to promote the Australasia Museum in China for the Australia artists. It is lead by Janet Mansfield.
  2. It is recommended to start to ask good artists who show interest to work in Fuping for 4 weeks. The names can come in two ways; first by volunteer but need to be qualified by the CB, In this case the volunteer should try to find their own traveling money. The second way is by CB’s searching and recommendation. The total number of artists we are looking fro in years 2006-7 is 8-10 artists. To execute this goal, it is better to have each SB member come up few names and their suitable visiting dates to come to China. All the names from these two ways or others will come to Michael Reighey’s attention and making final examination and decision by CB. It is FLICAM’s hope that such final list could be available in June for those who wants to come in 2006 and in December for anyone wants to come in 2007.
  3. It is tentatively set for the opening date of the Australasia Museum and the Exhibition at 5-6 weeks after the 2007 Gulgong Clay Fair (April 17, 2007?).

The fund raising for travel money working separately by CB. It should first find money for those come to China in 2006. it is also encourage all individuals to find their money through their own way.

II.B.     British Pavilion, Western Europe Museum, FLICAM

In Feb.11, 2006 Dr. Hsu flew to London to participate the COLLECT fair which is organized by British Craft Council. Dr. Hsu also supposed to meet ICMEA members in Rembrandt Hotel on the 11th morning.. That afternoon David Jones will come to see him for the FLICAM’s UK Pavillion.

Collect seemed doing better this year than last year. Dr. Hsu met one of the organizer Daniel Wells who again this year invited him to come . She knows that Dr. Hsu’s thinking of participating COLLECT next year. Craft Council is also the potential one to sponsor the traveling cost of UK artists to participate FLICAM’s UK pavilion workshop.

In ICMEA meeting, we discuss the 2nd ICMEA meeting in Fuping in 2007. Only 6 members attended. Dr. Hsu presented what FLICAM intended to do next year. but budget for ICMEA 2007 is still a problem.

Dr. Hsu met David Jones 5 pm in his hotel. He informed him FLICAM’s 2nd stage program and the Western European Museum is on agenda, FLICAM allocates 2 buildings of a total of 600 square meters in a 4 building complex to UK pavilion, the other two will be for Belgium and Holland. David is the organizer for FLICAM’s UK Pavilion.

David told me that he already have a list of 50 names and the key problem is still the traveling money. He told me that Craft Council get money but need powerful person to convince them to sponsor us. David thinks Emmanuel Cooper, the editor of Ceramic Review magazine, one of the ICMEA member could. Dr. Hsu asked David to study our proposal well and individually ask the artist see any of them can support themselves to go. To some artists to find travel money is not hard. We do not need to see this responsibility is ours. This is an important view point. Load more responsibility to artists themselves. For those who wants to go, they will find their ways. This is an important policy matter. FLICAM should inform all other country’s organizers.

During the Collect Fair in London, Dr. Hsu met Piet Stockman. He came to Dr. Hsu’s hotel and they had a brief discussion about FLICAM and agreed that Dr. Hsu will visit him in Belgium before he went to Holland. He arranged how Dr. Hsu visit him in his place in Belgium. In Feb. 12, Dr. Hsu took Euro Star from London to Brussels and then transferred to a local train Genk. Piet came to the train station and met Dr. Hsu and took him to see his house, studio and show room. They had a long talk and had a dinner together. His contact information is as following.

Piet also show interest to go himself but like to create a sacred place so he can display his work with religious feeling. Dr. Hsu promise him to discuss this matter with FLICAM’s architect and seeking the possibility to do so. As Dr. Hsu understand in the 4 unit complex of the Western European Museum, one of the building actually extends into the raised ground. Like dig into the caves. So, perhaps we can do something in the end part of the building.

When Dr. Hsu get back to Beijing, he will prepare letters to make initial contact of these artists and waiting for their first responses. Because these are senior artists and many of them are in old age, So Dr. Hsu hope that even they could not come they may be able to introduce other younger artists to come. We are looking for 6 artists, not a big number. Dr. Hsu only stayed Jenk one day.

II.D.     Holland Pavilion, Western Europe Museum, FLICAM

In Feb. 13th morning, Piet took Dr. Hsu to the train station in Mastericht and took a train to Amsterdam, Holland. Dr. Hsu arrived there at noon. Before Dr. Hsu came to Amsterdam, he contacted Gert Germeraad and Adriaain Rees in Amsterdam,. Adriaain has been in China many times and worked in Dr. Hsu’s studio in Beijing and also participated Fuping’s 1st International Ceramic Workshop. He arranged Gijs Assmann to meet Dr. Hsu at train station and took him to the Lloyd Hotel. Later Dr. Hsu met Adriaain and Stan. Their information as following:

Dr. Hsu came to Amsterdam in a good timing, These three artists plus the few others he will see in the next two days were reviving an artists group as organized by Struktuur 68 in 1968 when COBRA art movement was very hot. COBRA was a group artists from COpenhagen, BRussels, and Amsterdam. Their influence to the ceramics was the formation of Struktuur 68 Ceramic Studio. By the 90s, first generation of CORBA artists were getting old and the Struktuur 68 was fighting for survive. Now this group of young ceramic artists see the possibility of COBRA influence. Their style is bold, colorful, and expressive which is quite different from the current world ceramic trend. Now the owner of Struktuur 68, Henk Trumpie, got excited again and liked to revive the old Struktuur 68. So, the next day (Feb. 14) Dr. Hsu went with another their artist Hans to Den Haag to visit the Struktuur 68. and met Henk.

After Dr. Hsu arrived there he realized that he was there before during the Millennium Ceramic Conference time. He met the whole group and viewed all their work. They were doing large piece work for Adriaain and Hans. Dr. Hsu also met one of their artist Ingrid. Who later took back him to Amsterdam.

They all wanted me to visit the ceramic museum up in the northern country, a place called Leeuwarden. Henks daughter Ank Trumpie is the main Curator there. Now this young generation is regrouping themselves as a Structural Ceramic Group. They hope FLICAM museum could be their base in China, a show case for their newly reviving effort. They immediately feel the space we saved for Holland is too small. Dr. Hsu also emphasize that the future FLICAM Holland Pavilion should have other artists also, not just the Structural Ceramic Group. They agreed. Adriaan and Hans will visit China in May this year, Dr. Hsu ask them to make a full presentation to FLICAM and let FLICAM management to understand how good their project is and in turn what should we do more for them. In their studio Dr. Hsu also fond an old Danish artist’s work very attractive. His name is:

Although this time Dr. Hsu did not visit EKWC, but Dr. Hsu was there two times in the past. Because they are primarily dealing with international artists and very few from Holland. So, this time Dr. Hsu skipped their visit. But he will inform them what FLICAM will do for Holland.

The visit was very fruitful. Dr. Hsu previewed their coming exhibition ”The Mysterious Celadon”, a good collection of Chinese celadon gathered from 4 Holland museums. Museum’s Asian curator Willem companied him not only viewing the celadon show but also their China collection in the middle level. Then Dr. Hsu went to top level and had a good understanding of Holland ceramics from early time till now. Then Dr. Hsu had a good chat with Ank. She is the chief curator there. She also writes ceramic articles. She is also a member of the newly formed Structural Ceramic Group.

II.E   American Museum

In 2005, at Baltimore NCECA meeting, Dr. Hsu had a breakfast meeting with 3 presidents of NCECA (Elaine, Susan and Robert) and decided to have NCECA museum change into a North American Museum to include U.S.A., Canadian and Mexico.and hope it will happen in 2007. At FLICAM’s 2005 second stage planning, It is decided that we will build a North America Ceramic Museum and it has two wings. The longer one will be the one for the U.S.A. and the shorter one for Canada.

In the late Feburary, before Dr, plan to go to the Portland NCECA meeting, he cantact NCECA again and set meeting with 3 president again plus past president Ana and my advisor Eva Kwong on the March 8th 3pm. To discuss the real action we need . FLICAM plan to set the opening at the end of Spring of 2007.

In Feb. 24, Dr. Hsu went to Fuping to meet Mayor Benjamin Frank Venti of Monterey Park, California Dr. Hsu accompanied mayor and his visiting group viewed FLICAM museums. Dr. Hsu told him that according to our program we would build an American Museum in Fuping as a part of the FLICAM program. He was quite excited that we could do that and immediately inform me that he could help either from finding artist or assist the artists’ traveling money.

On Mar. 8, 2006, Dr. Hsu attended the NCECA (National Ceramic Education Council of America) Convention in Portland, Oregon. I had a lunch with Eva Kwong and NCECA new director John Klassen Eva has been serving as a consultant of FLICAM’s American Museum since 2004 when she visited Fuping. John shows great interest of FLICAM program and promised to help.

At 3 pm of Mar.10, 2006, Dr. Ichi Hsu, Eva Kwong, and Ann Holcomb were meeting with NCECA top officials: Susan Filley, Robert Harrison, John Klassen, Elaine O. Henry, and Holly Hanessian, exhibition Director.

Dr. Hsu first introduced the FLICAM program and indicating that in the 2nd Stage Plan, FLICAM will build a museum for North America, The tqothird side is USA Pavilon and the other one third is the Canada Pavilion. Dr. Hsu also introduced the highlight of the exchange program as following:

  • Artists from one country will be selected and invited to FLICAM, Fuping to participate a four week workshop.
  • FLICAM will build a museum for this country to collect and exhibit the art work.
  • Artists will contribute their work to FLICAM and be the charter member of this Museum.
  • Artists have to take care their own traveling cost, round trip from US to Xian.
  • FLICAM will provide all lodging and food for the artist during this four weeks period.
  • FLICAM will provide all materials, equipment, and necessary labor assistance for their ceramic work.
  • FLICAM emphasizes artists’ local cultural and environmental feeling and hope to integrate it into their creative mind for the work they made in Fuping.
  • Opening ceremony will be followed after the workshop and a catalog will be published later.
  • Museum member-artists are welcome back to work again in Fuping and a residency program is available and then they can own great portion of their work. Then everyone engaged in the discussion and came up the following understandings:
      1. NCECA will endorse FLICAM not only the USA Museum but also the whole International Museum complex. Dr. Hsu will issue a letter to NCECA and a formal letter will be responded to authorize the endorsement.
      2. NCECA will sponsor the travel assistance of the NCECA participants. The numbers NCECA can support will be decided after NCECA’s internal meeting later.
      3. Participants will be selected from the category of NCECA’s members. FLICAM shall participate the selection of the category of NCECA’s artist members, then FLICAM will select artists from the member list of these categories,
      4. Hope the selection of participated NCECA artists could be done before the end of May, then FLICAM will extend the invitation to the selected artists and wait their response and final list will be determined then.
      5. Tentatively the workshop period are in two terms: the first one is from June to the mid November of 2006, selected artists can come to work for any 4 weeks in Fuping during this period time but need to be confirmed by FLICAM to check the availability. The other term is. From mid April to June and have the museum opening at the end of this term period. However, this opening time needs to be checked with Australasian Museum opening date which was set in Sydney meeting in January, 2006 as 6 weeks after the Gulgong event. Dr. Hsui forget the Gulgong event date but it is sometime in May.
(Note: In the same evening, Dr. Hsu met Janet Mansfield and learned that the Gulgong event starts form April 17. It usually last for a week, so Australasia Museum opening date will be 6 weeks later, namely in the second weekend of June, or the Australian workshop is from mid May to mid June. So, in this case the best time for American Museum opening is the mid May and the workshop is from the mid April to mid May. Here I suggest the second term of workshop is from April 14 to May 12 and followed by the Museum opening on May 13, It is also suggested that April 14 and 15 can be spend in Beijing and fly to Xian on the 16th and having full 4 weeks working in Fuping )
      6. It is also possible that in addition to the NCECA sponsored artists, FLICAM may also invite some established American artists who can support their own travel money.
Artists met during NCECA time:
USA
Marc Leuthold, Harvey Sadow, Shoji Satake, Sharon Pollock, Jeri Au, John Balistreri, Patrick Siler,
Rick Hirsch, Katherine Taylor, Karen Gunderman, Christopher Davis-Benavides, Barbar Schwartz Ann Christenson, Harris Deller, Jason Hess, Rimas VisGirda, Patti Warashina Peter D. Held,

II.F   Canada Pavilion (North American Museum)

On March 11 during the NCECA meeting, I had a good talk with Les Manning, a ceramic artist who went to China many times and really enthusiastic about the ceramic activities in China. He likes FLICAM project and would like to organize the Fuping workshop for the Canadian artists. He agreed to make a first round survey and let me know who would be interested. I also met many Canadian artists and have contacted several other artists before I came to NCECA. They are Walter, Steve Hainneman, Ann Notimer, and Ann Robert and the responses are in general very good. Artists met during NCECA time:
Canada:
Les Manning, Katrina Chaytor, Kathryn Finnerty, Sin-Ying Ho

III. The Third Stage Plan of FLICAM

Because it is hard to predict the progress of the second stage progress now, we are not doing much planning. We do know that we still have quite few museums to build. However, the 2006 Feb. trip Dr. Hsu visited Italy and met Paraxo Group. They show strong interest to assist FLICAM to organize Italian artists.

It is also very encouraging in Germany. We know Westwald Museum well and we also know many ceramic artists there. So this is another country we can work on. Then the Riga meeting in 2006. FLICAM’s participation od IAC meeting there will make the Eastern Euripean Museum mature hast.

III.A.   Italy Pavilion, Mediterranean Museum

In Feb. 17,Dr. Hsu flew from Amsterdam to Genoa to meet an art event organizer Renza Sciutto renzasciutto@tiscali.it of Certro Culturale Paraxo Ole Listerude introduced her to me as a potential organizer for FLICAM. She is a very good artist specialize in oil painting with wax and ceramics with wax. She also makes special paper. Her daughter Alexandria Pischedda centroculturaleparaxo@yahoo.it (this e-mail add. Is also CCP’s.). Her father Antonello Pischedda (nello), the chairman of CCP. CCP formed in 1988. She came to airport to meet me. Then took me to see the Port Antico in Liguria, part of Genoa. They lived in Alassio. She introduced me to a couple of business woman Carraro maria Luisa and her Husband Lawyer Avv. Ennio Pischedda. They helped the Center. A Chinese translator. Miss Gao Wenqing, Christina servizi@rosasco.co.uk also came. Port Antico, a newly developed port square designed by Renzo Piano, the famous “Bigo”, a multDr. Hsuarm lifter. There is sculpture very powerful, by Lele Luzzati,

Fabrizio de Andre’ is a famous Ligurian singer, world famous. Dr. Hsu bought a 3 disk CD and intend to play it in the future Italy Pavilion. In a gallery, Dr. Hsu see a ceramic artist’s work. His name is Adriano Leverone. His work is a whole body, one side always polished smooth in black color, the other sides are pieces patched irregularly. He is a candidate for coming to Fuping.

In Alassio,Dr. Hsu made a proposal for Italy Pavilion. DR. HSUauthorized CCP as our organizer to find Italian artists. We signed the letter of authorization and also made a time table as following:

2006/02/19 FLICAM authorize CCP to represent FLICAM in Italy
2006/06/01 FLICAM obtain from CCP the tentative list of the Italian artists who are interest to come to work in China
2006/07/01 FLICAM inform CCP the schedule of building the Italian Museum (or Pavilion)

2008/06/30 Opening of the Italian Museum and also the Exhibition of Italian Ceramic Art in the Museum

In the evening, an Italian architect Giorgio Baldizzone visited me in Renza’s house. Dr. Hsu shown all constructions and the new plan to him. He is very much interested and say such brick structure was Italian’s tradition but it is no longer possible because the labor is too expansive. He leads a design center in Shanghai for Italian business. He has been in China many times. The next possible time to go there is May. Dr. Hsu welcome him to Fuping and discuss with our people and we may be able to work out a Italin Museum has Italian flavor.

Dr. Hsu told both of them then that eventually FLICAM will build a Ceramic Museum for Germany artists. They both indicated to help when the time comes.

In March 2006, Dr. Hsu attended the NCECA in Portland, and met Bernard again and Dr. indicated that it is likely FLICAM will build two museums at leat before 2008, namely the third stage plan will at least including two museums namely for Italy and Germany..The program with Gernmany will be discussed after Dr. return to China.
