Establish American Ceramic Museum
in FLICAM, Fuping

Progress Report

In 2005, at Baltimore NCECA meeting, Dr. Hsu had a breakfast meeting with 3 presidents of NCECA (Elaine, Susan and Robert) and introduced FLICAM to NCECA and informed them that likely FLICAM will build a museum for American ceramic artists in Fuping China in 2007 as part of an international ceramic museum complex in FLICAM, Fuping. At the end of 2005 FLICAMĄ¯s second stage planning was done, and it was decided that we will build a North America Ceramic Art Museum. It has two wings. The longer one will be the one for the U.S.A. and the shorter one for Canada.

In the late February, before Dr, Hsu plan to go to the NCECA Portland meeting, he contacted NCECA and asked for meeting with 3 presidents again Susan answered the request and a meeting was set up at 3pm on March 8th. To discuss the follow up actions. In addition to the three presidents, I also suggested two other persons to attend the meeting. One was also a past NCECA President Anna C. Holcomb who organized our last meeting in Baltimore and the other one was my invited advisor, NCECA member, Eva Kwong.

On Mar. 8, 2006, Dr. Hsu attended the NCECA (National Ceramic Education Council of America) Convention in Portland, Oregon.. Dr. Hsu had a lunch that day with Eva Kwong and Eva also invited the NCECA new director John Klassen. ?Eva has been serving as a consultant of FLICAM since 2004 when she visited Fuping. John showed great interest of FLICAM program and promised to help.

At 3 pm of Mar.10, 2006, Dr. Ichi Hsu, Eva Kwong, and Ann C. Holcomb were meeting with NCECA top officials: Susan Filley, Robert Harrison, John Klassen, Elaine O. Henry, and Holly Hanessian, exhibition Director.

Dr. Hsu first updated the FLICAM program and indicating that in the 2nd Stage Plan, FLICAM will build a museum for North America, The two-third side is USA section and the other one third is the Canada section. Dr. Hsu also introduced the highlight of the exchange program as following:

  • Artists from U.S.A. will be selected and invited to Fuping to participate a four week works session.
  • FLICAM will build a museum for USA to collect and exhibit the art work.
  • Artists will contribute their work to FLICAM and be the member of this Museum.
  • Artists will provide their own, round trip travel expenses from their hometown to China and to Xian Airport.
  • FLICAM will provide food and lodging for the invited artist during the four weeks period.
  • FLICAM will provide the materials from the Fuping factory, equipment and firings for their work made during this session, any short term and necessary labor assistance could be arranged by request.
  • FLICAM emphasizes artistsĄ¯ local cultural and environmental feeling and hope to integrate it into their creative mind for the work they made in Fuping.
  • Opening ceremony will be followed after the work session and a catalog will be published later.
  • Museum member-artists are welcome back to work again in Fuping. For each museum 2-3 vacancies are available for apply. A residency program is available and then they can own a good portion of their work.
